how do you paint popcorn ceilings without the ceiling coming off on your brush or roller?using water base paint is a no no ,it loosens the coating i know spraying would work ,but too messy,how about oil base paint it would not soften the popcorn

They sell special rollers just for popcorn ceilings. They are split throughout their length. Available wherever you purchase rollers.
When I painted mine I had to be careful not to be too heavy handed, thus causing the popcorn to attach to the roller. But i did use latex paint. The places where it did want to come off I did some creative caulking (paintable) after it dried and it looked great.
