Staining Luan Doors to Match Trim
#1

Hello,
I am staining new doors and woodwork. The doors are Luan and the woodwork is stain grade pine. Obviously the luan obsorbs much more stain and looks darker than the adjacent framing. Is ther a way to get the colors close to match? Thanks
Dan

Hello Dan, you will have to work with the stain or put more than one coat of stain on the pine. If you like the door color try two or more coats on the pine. If the pine is right you will have to thin the stain with paint thinner (I assume its oil stain) until it looks more like the pine. When it was the rage to stain all wood in the early "80's we kept a door or two at the paint store and would have them make a gallon of door stain and a gallon that went on everything else.....Mike

Thanks mike, i'll give it a try. I like the pine, so trying to make the doors lighter, somewhat. I found another suggestion that said to put a sanding sealer ? on the luan before staining so it doesn't absorb so much..would that work?

My experience with the sanding sealer as a conditioner would = light doors and dark pine as it prevents the stain from getting to the wood and you end up with the opposite problem. If your lucky this would work but do some samples to be sure. As far as a conditioner I use Minwax wood conditioner but that is still hit and miss. Nothing will assure uniform color other than color matching the doors being worked with vs the pine trim and that takes true paint store experience......Mike
