Dirty Walls

This problem is a little hard to explain. In my parents' house, dirt collects on the wall where the studs are, so as you're looking at the wall the location of the studs are very clear, especially where the nails are. Now what I'm wondering is, has anyone seen this problem before? If so what is the best guess on what's going on and how to prevent it from happening in the future?

I see this on buildings with no insulation and old paint. I think it is because there is a temperature gradient between the contact points of the studs and the wall and the rest of the wall. Of course, there may be a real reason for it.

I would prime to seal the wall well, and paint and see how it works out.

i agree with chfite I've also seen this in houses with old oil burning furnaces ( that need maintenance) and where there's a wood burning stove (smoky one)
