time estimate

Is there any easy way to estimate how long it will take to paint something like a house or a deck?

It really depends on who's doing the painting. A profesional painter works faster than a do it yourselfer. but it really all depends on who is painting and what they are painting.

These are production rates I generally use on estimating house painting and deck staining, for a journeyman painter.

These are brush and roll, no prep included. Figure prep time accordingly:

Siding>
Clapboard siding 1st coat 175 square foot per hour
2nd coat 225 sf/hr

Board & Batten 1st 175 sf/hr
2nd 225 sf/hr

Wood siding 1st 275 sf/hr
2nd 300 sf/hr

Rough sawn 1st 80 sf/hr
2nd 100-125 sf/hr

Gutters/downspouts 1st 75-100 linear feet per hour
2nd 100-150 lf/hr

Windows (metal or wood) each coat 50-75 sf/hr

Doors>
Paneled each coat 42 sf/hr
Flush each 84 sf/hr

Frames (window and door) & mullions 1st 80 sf/hr
2nd 120-150 sf/hr

Decks>
Horizontal surface
Paint or stain 1st 300-350 sf/hr
2nd 350-400 sf/hr

Railings 1st 80 lf/hr
2nd 100-120 lf/hr

Prep>
Pressure washing to clean 350-700 sf/hr depending upon condition
Pressure washing to rinse 750 sf/hr
Caulking 50-75 lf/hr
Sanding/ light patching 250-340 sf/hr

If there is ladder work, adjust accordingly.

Hope this helps.
