Ceiling color
Hello --We are doing a major remodeling project of the entire house. Can somebody tell me what the latest trend is for ceiling paint color? Is the trend to paint the same color as the walls or is is to go with a white or cream color? Some of the rooms will have pretty striking colors. I was thinking of painting the living room a deep beige, and a bedroom a bright yellow. I don't know what to do about the ceiling. I have seen sometimes where if you paint the ceiling the same color as the walls, the room looks comes together better. But I have also seen where one color can be overwhelming. Any thoughts? The window and door trim will be a cream color. What are professionals seeing out there these days. Is it just a matter of preference or is there a trend one way or the other?

IMO ceilings look best flat white. In over 15 years painting, 95% of the times I paint ceiling and walls same color is for resale, or apartments, or other low-budget paint-it-quick-and-go projects. I think same color walls and ceilings look cheap. Remember, I'm no decorator, these are just my opinions.
I have done just a couple over the years where the ceiling was painted a "custom" color. I've done tangerine walls w/ pale orange ceiling, apple green walls w/ pale yellow ceiling just to name a few.
When it comes to decorating, nothing IMO is "wrong." If you like THAT look, then THAT is in style to you.
If you are painting bold colors on the walls, a bright white ceiling sets it off and also draws your eyes up, creating a nice effect.
This looks especially nice if the trim is bright white too.
Take a look at my website for some examples, you can email me for more if you need more pics.
Hope this helped.

That is exactly what I needed to know! Like yourself, I was looking for a reply from someone with extensive painting experience. Thank you ever so much for taking the time and the website has great examples. I really like the idea of offsetting the wall paint from the ceiling paint too. That gives me some good ideas for future projects. Thanks again. :-)

general rule of thumb
As a general rule of thumb, 8 foot ceilings should be white to make the room look larger. Nine feet and higher allows off-white or color.
That said, there are always exceptions. My DR has a tray ceiling. I painted the tray part the same forest green as the walls under the chair rail. The outer part of the ceiling is white. It looks really good.
