Painting Brick Fireplace

I have a red brick fireplace that overwhelms the room and would like to paint it a light color. What kind of paint or other materials do I need? Any "rules" on application?

Make sure its clean and dust-free, and prime with a latex masonry primer. Then paint away.

IMO, semi-gloss or satin looks best on fireplaces.

If painting the inside (firebox) area, it must be cleaned thoroughly with TSP or something comparable and hi-temp paint should be used.

Make absolutely sure you want to paint it. You cannot clean the brick of all the paint if you decide you do not like it.
