Help, I have maroon carpet! Paint?

I am buying a house that has dark maroon carpet on most of the bottom floor. I am not going to be able to afford to replace it for a while. I can't seem to come up with a wall color that will make my wife happy, and I don't want white. Does anyone have any ideas on what light to medium colored paints will match up well with this dark carpet? Any help would be great, I'm lost.

Ahhhhh the ever loveable maroon carpet . It is a very tough color to match anything with. You can pretty much get rid of any warm colors ie. red, orange, yellow and redish-violet. Some people opt for light green but personaly it screems Christmas to me. Blues are not a bad choice however some people do not like all kind of primary colors, tends to look like a crayola box. My personal opinion is either a warm cream color or a warm light brown color. I would go for the brown myself. Many people are afraid of brown but with the right accents and trim color it can look very impressive. I would shoot for a brown more on the warm side and about as dark as coffee with a couple of creams.

Another omportant thing to consider is the trim color. This is going to be right up against the carpet. I think a nice semi-gloss white will be fine for this type of application. I would go with something very light against the carpet at any rate.

Paint color is a very difficult thing to choose. Do not be afraid to take a chance. People get very afraid to break out of the "white thing" and miss out on something that could look amazing. Painting a a relatively cheep mistake so keep that in mind. These are all of my opinions as paint color is purely individual. What I think looks great, you may think looks terrible. It is all a matter of opinion. I am not an interior decorator however I am an artist and paint interiors on the side and usualy talk to clients a lot about color so I am not speaking out of my _____ too much best of luck to you and if you need anymore help let me know.

Thanks a lot for the info. I was leaning towards a cream color even before your suggestion, it sort of made sense in my head without actually seeing the two colors together yet. I'll be down at the hardware store this weekend staring into the abyss of color swatches. I hope it goes well. Thanks again
