painting concrete basement floor

We have recently ripped up the carpet from our finished basement. We are going to paint a faux marble pattern with floor paint. We are currently trying to prepare the floor and would like some suggestions on the best way to do this. Our biggest problem is getting up the glue residue from the carpet pad. We have tried sanding it by hand and with an electric wire brush. The glue is so gummy this was a worthless effort. We then tried getting it up with mineral spirits and a metal scraper this seems to be working the best but the odors are horrible and permeate the entire house. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Thank you.

The scraper is probably the best thing to use. There is no easy way to do this.

Use a heat gun and a scraper.
