Question Getting rid of textured paint on walls

I've recently rented an apartment that has textured paint (like the kind you usually find on ceilings) on the walls. I've gotten permission to repaint, and I want to get rid of the texture before I do so. Any ideas on how to do this? Thank you!

Have you tried scraping it off with a stiff 6" putty knife? That would be my first attempt.

I would knock down the tips with a knife first, then I would float the walls out with a 12" knife, putting it on kinda thin and not too heavy.
