Need help with painting trim

My husband and I are trying to decide on what color to paint our trim. We originally wanted to use different colors on the walls in certain rooms...such as our bedroom, the living room and the kitchen. The remaining rooms were going to be a shade of taupe. My question is, does all of the trim have to be the same color consistently throughout the house. If so, what color (other than white) would match the other colors we might choose. If the trim can vary throughout the house how do you make a "seamless" change from one room to the next when you get to the door. Do you have to paint the door the same color as the trim? Help!

That is most common, but doesn't have to be.

Maybe a shade darker or shade lighter than the wall colors.

Use the doorframe as a stopping point. If its an open floor plan, use an inside corner, outside corner, or you will have to just cut a line.

Once again, that is most common, but it doesn't have to be.

Most of these are personal opinion type questions. As for the colors, what looks good to you? Where to stop the colors, sometimes you have to paint it out, live with it for a little while, and then maybe go 'I think it would have looked better to start the color there than here' and do a touch up.

Hope this helped.
