new DIY painters here

My wife and I have just purchased our first home. Painting before we move in is top prioraty. We have done some small jobs around our current rental, but want to do it right. My first question would be if we should remove the trim or mask it off. Second, since it has already been painted, all I need to do is clean the walls? Should I lightly sand to rough up the surface?

I would just wash everything with some TSP or Spic and span prior to painitng, unless there is more than just simple accumulated dirt and grime involved.

I think it is better to develop a steady hand with a good sash brush rather than deal with taping off trim.

I would reserve light sanding for glossy surfaces.

Good tools and materials make all the difference in results.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I wouldn't take off all the trim. Putting it back up would be like piecing together a puzzle, and you might not be able to get the mitered corners back together tight. And the odds of breaking a piece taking off is pretty high.

I would suggest also to get acquainted with a brush and free hand it. Tape will work too if you feel the need.
