Paint color?

Helping a guy paint his living room, however we can't seem to find the 'right' color. It is an open room so we were thinking of painting the 3 walls that are connected. The furniture is Navy Blue, 2 chairs and 2 couches. It is a Modern room with glass tables and brushed aluminum accents. The area rug is rectangled with a 2-tone border, tan and brown with a smaller rectangle insert that is an off-white with a little brown in it and 7 by 11 mini circles within that, their color is beige. There is also 2 mini palm trees in the room and a large dark bookshelf.

As for colors he was thinking of soft denim walls with a little grey in it with the sponge look. I thought that would be a little busy and thought maybe a beige that matches the mini circles and the trim in the off white color of the rug.

Any ideas would be helpful.

i would avoid any shade of light blue, and especially avoid sponging. it will probably turn out looking country, which is the total opposite of Modern!

i agree with you. i'd go for simplicity and pull a cool neutral color out of the rug (nothing too warm & yellow-based, or it won't work with the brushed aluminum furniture).

We have found 2 colors we like: Brown Bag and a Water Chestnut one is lighter than the other and it matches the rug well. We are thinking of making the wall the darker shade and the trim in the lighter. Thanks for you help and any other hints would we great for first time painters!
