Unhappy painting a bathroom

we made a colossal mistake and painted latex over oil paint in the bathroom - dark burgundy color. after 3 coats of paint it is still streaky and terrible looking - what can we do?

Is the paint peeling back off, or being repelled in some way? If not, its there to stay most likely.

Try to lightly sand it, and apply 2 thin coats, evenly, with a 1/2" or 3/8" roller.

painting the bathroom

Thanks for your advice - the paint seems to be sticking on okay - its just really streaky - especially when showering - would we still use about 2 coats of latex on top of it to make it even? We don't have to take all of it off and start again?

wrong cause....

Its the color, not the undercoating.

Red is very difficult to get looking good, the darker the more difficult. The reason is there is a lot of pigment and its hard to get that pigment evenly distributed.

The task is made more difficult by using certain brands of paint and using cheap tools. You get what you pay for.

You probably will need a couple more coats. Use quality tools. Keep a wet edge. Don't roll it or brush it out too much.
