Paint that resist moisture/water in bathrooms

We are renovating our bathroom. We want to put MDF base moulding where the tile and wall meet. Our carpenter tells us to use tile instead to prevent possible water damage on the wood base moulding. But we see (wood) base moulding in pictures all the time.

How should I prepare the MDF base moulding for the bathroom environment? What paint and/or primer should I use? Should I spend more on real wood instead of MDF?

I'd rather not use tile at the base.

Thanks in advanced.

If you use a good bonding primer, and 2 coats of high quality semi gloss or enamel, it should be fine. Let it fully cure before its exposed to excess moisture.
