painting formica ( i think ) cabinets?

just purchased a new home....in the bathrooms and kitchens i have these ugly almond colored cabinets w/ wood colored edging and ridges where you pull the cabinet open.,....i am wondering if i can paint these???? i say they are formica but not sure, maybe some sort of laminate....anyway not wood. can i paint them and if so how?

Wash thoroughly, scuff sand, prime with alkyd primer, then paint with latex finish coat.

I have just purchased a 100 year old home. The floors have been painted before and i was thinking of painting them again.
