Angry Dry Rot

I just pressure washed my house in preparation for painting - there are some big (6x12?) beams running from the roof to a post for style (not supporting) and they are showing signs of what I assume is dry rot - they are exposed daily to the sun. I know I really should change them but to do this would be a huge and expensive project - its only surface, nowhere near going through the whole beam. Is there anything I can treat them with before painting or should I just prime & paint?

I would suggest using a wood petrifier on these before priming/painting. Click here to see an example of this type product.
