Painting on wood trim

Hi, I want to paint my living room walls and wood trim. I know that the paint that goes on the walls should be flat. Can you please advise me on the kind of paint I should use on the wood trim (including floor moulding)? Right now, the trim is painted in an off-white color and I want to paint it white. Will I need to use a primer? If yes, then what kind? Will appreciate any help/comments on this...

Thanks.

You more than likely do not need to use primer. Assuming its latex going over latex, which it probably is. Primer is usually only used on bare wood to make the paint stick.

If you are going latex over oil, a primer is required. for latex over latex, it is not.

Semi gloss enamel is the norm around here for trim.

Thanks guys for your tips! highly appreciated. Well, there's absolutely no shine in the trim so I'm assuming that simply painting over it with semi-gloss enamel as suggested will be fine. However, I do have a 6" piece of bare wood moulding (result of some repair work) in between and I don't want to buy new primer for just that bit. I have an oil based primer that I had used in my kitchen? Can I use that? Will the semi-gloss enamel be fine over this primer? Thanks so much for your help!

Also, you guys mean Latex based semi-gloss enamel instead of alkyd semi-gloss enamel, right?

The oil primer will work good for bare wood. And yes, I mean Latex s/g enamel. It will adhere to the oil primer fine.

Thanks! I have primed the bare wood trim, bought a latex semi gloss enamel trim paint. I am all set to paint now! Once again, thanks for your help!
