painting over tile wallcover

I am starting on a bathroom remodel and have stripped 25 year old wallpaper to find a kind of wallcover that looks like tile. It looks as if it came in roll form since there are faint lines where a new strip was placed. This tile stuff was only put on the bottom half of the wall. There are cracks in it since the house is 90 years old. If I paint as it, I'm afraid it will look worse than the old wallpaper. I am wondering if there is a product to cover this in order to smooth it out and then paint it? Or should I just leave well enough alone and paint over it and just live with the rectangle tile look?

Hang a heavy duty wall liner over it, float the seams, prime and paint it.

Click HERE for a great liner thats not too expensive.
