How to paint the stairways?

i have rugs on my stair way. one side of the stair is leaning against the wall, thus the rug is touching against the walls. so how do i go about painting that part without getting the paint on the rug?

I'd think you could use a heavy duty tape, (not painters tape that won't be as adheasive) and just tape the carpet down as far as you can. That's what I would try. Obviously just putting a piece of cardboard down, or a painter's tool, the carpet will just come back up. Tape that down, it shouldn't damage the carpet.
