Painting a patch
what is the best way to paint over a patch of joint compound thats been sanded smooth. I primer then paint but the patch always comes through. Maybe 2 coats of primer?

The mud is coarse and soaks up the paint leaving it dull. You are correct in applying primer 1st then paint but to match I would apply more paint as thick as you can. After this (repeting if necessarey) the finish will match. I'm assuming it isn't a stain you are concerned with that keeps coming through (water soluble).

are you repainting the entire wall?
Are you repainting the entire wall or just the patch?
If just the patch, are you using paint left over from the last time the wall was painted?
How long has it been since the wall was painted?
Even left over paint will not match after several years. How long depends on several factors.

paint entire wall
Ok - you have me confused. Have you already primed and patched and the patches are showing thru or was your first post just your previous experience and you haven't primed the current project yet?
I hope you washed all the paste off the walls.
Prime all the walls. Now look at your patches and satisfy yourself with how they look.
Paint the entire wall - two coats.
