paint spraying coats question

I just purchased a cheap air compressor paint sprayer ($40.00) ....spraying acrylic on wood....the sprayer worked awesome and I'm real pleased with the results in the first coat....it's a semi gloss and the finish has a slight roughness....will this disappear with subsequent coats?....or do I fine sand or steel wool as with laquer between coats..........thanks!

It may level out a little with more coats, but it usually will still leave a very slight stipple or dimpling. It also depends on the quality of paint.

jvirtue,

If the gun is an external mix, syphon feed type the results will be unnaceptable.

An external mix nozzle is one which has two or more air holes in the cap and a center hole where the paint comes out.
Because water based paint dries so quickly it begins to dry before it hits the surface and doesn't get a chance to level out.
you really need an internal mix gun which has a cap with a single outlet and has a pressurized pot.

What are you using to guage the thinning of the paint?
A thinning guage is a small cup with a hole in the bottom where you time how long it takes the cup to empty and is fairly inexpensive.

You have to spray a medium wet coat so that the surface can level out but not so heavy that it runs.

I asked about thinning the paint at the paint store and was told it wasn't necessary...I remember that cup from a Wagner I used a while back, I'll get one today....thanks again
