Painting a Natural Finish House

When the addition is finished, and I sure hope it's soon because I'm either going to go broke or die from the stress, I am going to paint my natural finish redwood siding. It is currently stained, I believe, with Home Depot's Baer exterior finish stain. Unknown if oil or water based, but it is about 14 years old.

How do I have to prepare the wood in order to paint over the stain? Also, is it better to spray paint the house (for ease and speed) or is it better to hand paint the surface for better penetration and adherence.

Any help would be appreciated.

Powerwash it, kill any mold on it, fill holes and cracks with exterior spackle and caulk respectively.

I'd go with an oil primer, better safe than sorry.

I prefer the brush n roll method myself.
