Removing old paint

What can I use to remove several coats of Latex and oil base paint from a celing.

Why do you want to remove it. There may be other options

The entire area is cracking

Is the paint cracking or is the ceiling cracking?

Just the Paint is cracking.

I would just scrape all the loose paint off with a 12" taping knife or similar and prime with Kilz or comparable primer.Then add texture of your choice(or none) and then paint.
