I am painting the ceiling of my home which is about 50 years old. There are some places that need to be repaired. The paint there is no doubt lead. What should I do to protect myself
while sanding, and the area I am working in?

First read what HUD has to offer. Pamphlets are available also. http://www.hud.gov/lea/leadtxte.html http://www.hud.gov/lea/leadhelp.html

Then consider encapsulation prior to making repairs. http://www.willispaints.com/speclead.htm From what little I do know about lead abatement, most people cannot afford the necessary protective equipment.

OK How about this!!!What if I wallpaper the ceiling over the lead based paint????The wallpaper will be there to stay.It just gets new paint as needed. ( It looks like tin squares)

That is a better idea than sanding. Another way is to apply 1/4" sheet rock over the existing surface.
