Question

We have an older house that has texture on the walls. The texture has been patched over many times. How do you remove the texture from the wall to make the wall smooth?

Cool

Assuming that that this is not plaster, but sheetrock mud texture, the best way to remove it is to spray it with water from like a Windex-type srayer bottle and scrape it off. Wet it just enough to make the mud soft, so as not to damage the sheetrock paper underneath. Scrape off with a wide-blade sheetrock knife (10" or so). Test in an area where there is not sheetrock seam tape. Put down plastic before starting (this is very messy, but the best way). Repair sheetrock, after cleaning off texture mud. Good Luck! Edit: If this is plaster, the best way to smooth it over is to skim coat it with the proper type of sheetrock mud (ask at dealer).
