Question

I have a room that is painted a burgundy color. Really dark. Is there a way to simply paint over it with a light color-like white or should we remove the old paint first? If we remove, how should we do it without a big mess?

You can't remove it without a big mess. If the surfaces are glossy, I would sand it lightly to rough up the surface. I would then apply a coat of a quality primer such as Ben. Moore Fresh Start or a good quality primer by another paint supplier ssuch as Shermin Williams or Glidden. After allowing the mfg. recommended drying time apply 2 coats of a quality finish paint paying attention to the mfg. recoat times. This should do it.

A final note - the yellows do not cover very well due to lack of pigments in them.
