Question

We have a fireplace in our family room that has light colored bricks which are really dirty. So far we have not been able to get them clean and we are thinking about painting the bricks. Any suggestions on the best way to do this will be appreciated.

Go to a pro paint store, get a cleaning agent called TSP, use a scrub brush and a bucket of water to clean the bricks as well as you can, this will make a mess so cover everything below the brick(carpet, tile, etc.) Ask for a good masonary primer and when dry(the next day) use a good roller, 1/2" should work, and prime the brick. After the primer dries if there are any cracks you will want to calk them with a latex paintable calk, smooth down with a wet finger and wipe off excess with a wet rag. Wait a couple of hours for latex paint, next day for oil and paint, the more coats you put on the smoother the finish will appear on brick, use at least 2 coats of paint.
