Please advise the best way to paint paneling. Is it a bad idea to paint paneling?

I have painted paneling on several houses with no problems and heres how to go about it.

If there is any grease or dirt on the paneling, clean it with a TSP solution. Sand the paneling lightly to remove any glossy spots. Remove the dust from sanding.

Caulk the vertical joints in the paneling along with the baseboards, crown moldings, door and window trim.If there are any nails sticking up , set them and fill the holes with window glazing compound (same as painters putty).

Apply a oil based quality primer such as Ben Moore Fresh Start or a Shermin Williams equivalent. Then apply two latex top coats of your color choice. Use a quality paint and follow the drying and recoat times on the cans. Use quality brushes and rollers such as Purdy or Praeger.

Good advise, the only thing I would add is when calking use a wet finger to smooth and a wet rag to wipe any excess, and use a paintable latex calk.
