patio preservation and painting

i have build a cedar patio in Aug, and how long will it take to dry before i paint it. i would like to know the process and equipment to use to paint and preserve the natural colour. i need help Winter is coming, and i do not want the colour to change.

fokwami, Did you cut this wood yourself? If you bought it from a lumber yard kiln or air dried it is ready to treat now. I think I would start with a coat or two of Thompsons Water Sealer. After a week or two if you really want to cut UV and prevent graying use a coat of marine varnish. Don't forget to get some sand additive for the walking surface to prevent slipping if you go with the varnish. Bondex has one that works very well sold as Decorative Sand Finish.
The Thompsons can be sprayed with a garden sprayer. The varnish can be brushed, rolled or sprayed. A small Wagner or similar gun will make short work of the varnish job. Brush or roll the walking surface with the sand additive...Mike
