How long does paint last?

Hi all,
I have a bunch of paint in my basement that is about four years old. I am wondering how long paint that is still in a can will last for. The piant has been opened and used before and resealed. It still looks good to me, but I am concerend about using it on new walls. Also, does oil or latex last a different length of time? Thanks a lot.

MY experience is that oil tends to turn to hardened jelly at the top and this uses up its "drier" agent. After this happenes I don't use it unless it's very thin, and then try it to see if it will dry like normal. Latex can develope fungal growth (turns color at the top) so if this has occurred I don't use it otherwise try a test for drying capability. The important point is how well sealed from air the can has been. Although I'm sure there may be some chemical reactions between the paint components that take place over time also.
