Question Painting old cast iron drain pipes

In my garage cast iron drain pipes are half exposed in the drywall back wall. The paint is flaking and there is some discoloration. What is the best way to clean and re-paint these pipes?

Clean the old paint off with a hand wire brush and make sure it is dry. Then you can paint with your choice of paints. It may have had condensate on it when originally painted and this is what caused the flaking. Good luck.

If there is any rust present be sure to use oil base paint or atleast a good oil primer on the rusted areas.

If there is any rust best to use a primer geared for rusted metal such as Rustolem's Rusty Metal Primer or simular. Also you'd need to sand or scrape it to remove any loose flakes etc.Surfaces should be clean and as mentioned dry regardless.
