Painting Desk

I am making a desk top out of MDF and will be painting it white, I would like to know if I need to treat the top in some manner (like a clear coat?). I am thinking the paint alone will look bad after some heavy use?

Thanks!

Any good Oil trim paint should hold up pretty well. Glossier paints tend to hold up better than say a Satin sheen, but will show more scratches. MDF is a pretty soft surface, it won't hold up like Mahogany or Oak, so you might want to get a piece of glass cut for the top or a Desk Blotter. If you want to go the clear coat way just remember oil Poly will turn the color of the top a golden honey color as will shellac and varnish, which leaves Latex Poly, it works but I'm not sure how it will hold up to "Desk Traffic" (scratch wise).

Oil enamel dries fairly hard, don't know if poly wood help or not but as painterman said it will change the color/ I doubt if latex poly will work well over oil base. I would highly recomend a paint like SWP's pro classic waterborne. It dries hard, doesn't yellow, low odor and cleans up with water.
Paint will never hold up like formica so you will need to either protect it or re coat occasionally.

Thanks for the feedback - I appreciate the help. I think I will try the water based SWP approach - I want to keep the white finish and water based will be easier to clean.

Thanks again!

Just so you know - waterborne and water based latex are not the same animal.
