paint over stained wood beam

Hi! There are come big wooded beams in a house I'm going to paint. I was wondering if it's possible to paint them over the dark stain they have now. I believe the wood is pine. Would I have to sand the stain right off, or can I prime with alkyd and then paint?

No need to sand it off, a good oil primer, followed by 2 coats of finish paint should be fine.

So, once I primed, I could use the same ceiling paint I'll use for the rest of the ceiling? Or do I need to use a specific "wood" paint?

Thanks prowallguy! That makes it a lot easier than sanding, restaining, varnishing....
