Want to paint bookshelf...
I would like to paint a bookshelf that was from Ikea. I am guessing it is pressed board with some kind of veneer or laminate over top. I would like to change it from the normal wood color to black. Any thoughts as to the best and nicest way to go about this would be helpful.
Thank you

Scuff sand it and remove the dirt/dust completely.
Prime it with an oil/alkyd primer, or a latex bonding primer.
Zinsser's 123 or ICI Gripper are two examples.
XIM will also grip to slick surfaces very well.
Then top coat it with paint of your choice.
I would suggest a good, hard enamel. Sherwin Williams ProClassic Trim paint, or Ben Moore's Water-borne Satin Impervo are 2 good examples.

As PWG said it is best to finish with a hard enamel - the majority of latex enamels do not dry hard enough for a bookshelf. Use an oil base enamel or one of the new waterborne finishes.
