I have been using an oil-based paint to repaint my steel insulated doors. The weather has been dry and hot, yet it's taking a long time for the paint to dry & the surface did not come out as smooth as I would have liked. Would Penetrol have helped?

 

Penatrol will help the paint flow together better but it won't speed up drying time - may even slow it down some. A little bit of paint thinner mixed in the paint may help

 

I would use the Penetrol. It is made for your type of problem. I conditions the paint,does not thin it, and retards the drying process so the paint can level.

Don't know what kind of door you are painting ,but in hot weather -or not- I usually remove the hardware and do the panels if there are any. I wipe the paint off that gets on the surrounding area so just the panels are painted.

Next I do the horizontal rails and finish the with the paint pad.Possibly wiping off anything that gets on the vertical stiles. You could also tape off the stiles where they meet the rails. It is actually quicker to tape it off.

Finally I do the vertical stiles and finish them with the pad.

Always try to keep the paint off whare you just painted

If there is a rubber door seal at the bottom mask it off. You will never get the paint off. Looks ugly.

Somehow I managed to get paint on my oil-rubbed bronze door knobs. I called the mfr, Kwik-Set & they only recommend vinegar/water 50:50, no mineral spirits. Any other recommendations?
