Dry time between coats for latex paint?

How long do I really have to wait between coats? Depending on the paint, manufacturers recommend anywhere from 4 hours to 1 day before applying a second coat. Regardless of the recommendations, can I recoat after the paint is dry to the touch?

Mmmm....not exactly
Dry to the touch and it still could peel up the previous coat when you are doing the next one
It has to go a bit further than that, it has to cure a bit
It's not a cut and dry time, or else they could put that in the instructions
It depends on how thick you put it on, the humidity, what material/paint it's going on, etc...

I can tell you over night is best, and four hours usually will do it if you are careful
What I mean is, if you start "cutting in" at 8AM, and are finished rolling by Noon, usually you can "cut in" the second coat after lunch, if you start from the same spot you started coat 1 at, and go the same direction, follow the same pattern as the first coat, and continue to do so with the rolling (finishing coat 2 in the same spot at 4:30)

You hit each spot with coat 2 about 4.5 hours later

Short of high humidity or other extreme conditions, that usually works
Also keep in mind that if it isn't going to work that soon (you'll probably know right away), I stop coat 2 immediately and move onto something else

The problem with recoating too soon is the paint you are applying can soften up the paint that was applied earlier.
