Painting a textured wall?

the walls in this townhouse are textured -- as if someone took a big rake or comb and did big arches all over (much like a ceiling with not popcorn, but a textured finish) -- I am having a hard time explaining it...sorry... -- can you paint right over it, b/c sanding it off isn't really an option...would you just use a big nap to make sure it soaks all the way everywhere in/around the "grooves" in the texture?

Thanks

I would apply a thin layer of mud over the texture to smooth it out, then prime and paint.

Me too
If it's not too "high" a skim coat of joint compound should smooth it out

If you want to keep the texture use a 3/4" roller nap to apply the paint.

If you don't want to skim it yourself, you could probably find someone to do it on the side and it shouldn't cost that much.

Thanks for the advice, I think we're going to try painting a relatively hidden away area with a big nap and see how that goes -- I'm really really not interested in removing the texture...if it doesn't look right, then we'll move on with the skimming suggestion from there, but I'm all for the least amount of effort if it will still be presentable.

thanks again!
