Paint type.

I am not too sure how I am going to explain the type of paint or the look that I am looking for but I will do my best. I have seen on furniture such as bedding frame, drawer, etc... The paint color is like black or really dark navy blue. The surface is smooth and the context is between glossy and flat. I have been told that the result come from the mix of Navy blue and shellac but not too sure if that is true. Thank you in advance.

Can you see or feel any woodgrain?
That might be "ebonizing"
Looks like "ebony"

Or can you not tell if it's even wood under the finish?
