A primer is best to cover the filled cracks and holes before painting

For nail holes and small cracks I use a latex "spackle" hole and small crack filler
It's made by Elmer's
I usually don't need to primer over repairs made with that

For bigger repairs, I use joint compound
I'll spot prime them, usually with whatever I have open
I try and keep a can of Pittsburgh Primer/Sealer in the van
Unless it's a problem area in which case I'll break out a Zinsser product depending on the problem

With the exception of elastormaric coatings [for masonary] paint is not used to fill cracks. Sometimes they will look filled while the paint is wet but unless you use spackling or j/c the cracks will reappear.

A wise man once told me:
"Paint covers, but it don't fill."
