Unhappy painting over stripes

please help! I need to repaint an interior wall. previously this wall had verticle stripes painted on it - then someone attempted to paint over these stripes - obviously you can still see the image of the stripes through the new paint - you see the stripe not the old color coming through.

what are my options for resulving this problem?

Welcome to the forum

It is always possible that the wall just needs another coat of paint.

If the painted stripes are thicker [or raised] you would need to use spackling or joint compound to smooth the transition. Just apply a thin coat of mud over the edges of the stripes. Sand when dry, dust and prime. You should then be ready for paint.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but i do believe you can just scrape off teh old paint, sand then repaint. I don't think you need to really use the mud - just my $0.02

Any scraping of the paint would likely result more patch work. A thin coat of mud IS the easiest fix.

Yes, this situation calls for a "skim coat" of joint compound

My kid's rooms had graphics painted on using painters tape. When we went to repaint we sanded the paint lines and the didn't show up when we applied the new paint.
