Red face Strange ooze coming out of the wall

I rent an old 1920's Spanish style duplex and have had this problem of a sap like ooze coming out of the wall and dripping down it. I'm thinking of painting the room, but would like to take care of this problem first. Does anyone know what it might be?

It could be tar bleed through if there was a smoker in there at one time and it was not sealed properly

It may be helpful if you could tell us if the walls are drywall or plaster
And what color the ooze is

Was it painted just before you moved in? or has it been a while?

Strange ooze coming out of the wall

It's a plaster wall. The ooze is thick and brown like caramel--I can actually strech it like caramel. Could it be old wallpaper glue? The wall paint is also crackeling--that is where the ooze is coming out--sometimes in big runny goops. I think it's been a few years (5), since it has been painted.

Strange ooze coming out of the wall

...oh, don't think that that hasn't run through our minds -- along with Mystical Stigmata and flesh eating mold. Personally, I'm hoping for mystical stigmata -- I could charge admission for viewings and cover my paint cost.

Thats kinda what I was thinking, I don't think I've ever ran accross anything like that before. It'll be interesting to see what others have to say.

Could this be wood sap oozing? The only way to find out the source of the ooze is to cut into wall. If you have moisture issues, there could be a wood fungus causing sap to ooze.

I have run into this before and I'm not sure of the cause but believe cleaning and then priming the affected area with pigmented shellac is the best plan of attack.

Talking Mystery ooze solved or Honey have you seen the ooze?

Turns out the mystery ooze was "honey". At some earlier date bees had built a hive in the wall and a previous owner had it removed, but some the the honey remained. As light hit the wall, it caused the honey to ooze out of it. Large patches of the wall had to be removed in order to solve the problem.

Wow
Thanks for the update
That's pretty wild

...I was rooting for Mystical Stigmata and a Hollywood movie deal for you, but honey's still a pretty good story
