painting molding

I have some base molding that i want to paint with a roller snce it will be much faster than a brush. Will I get a smooth finish on it? I notice that a roller on walls leaves just a hint of texture (I think) but Im not sure if thats the roller, or the sheetrock.. or my imagination.

You're not imagining, it's called roller stipple. Typically, a 1/4" nap roller is used when a smooth finish is desired.

Maybe, depends to some extent on your skill. Oil based paint tends to stipple less than latex, so that also might be worth looking into.

No roller [even 1/4" mohair] will give a stiple free finish. Since base is low it is unlikely the stiple will be noticed if a good job is done. Check out some of the mini rollers as they are ideal for this.

I like to paint moldings prior to install but because of profiles, a roller doesn't work too well for me.

I do use a little 3 inch roller to roll the tops of unintstalled bbds because I can do that in one swoop but I brush the fronts and then wipe the backs and bottoms to keep off drips.

A couple 2 foot aluminum saw-horses work real well as drying racks.
