Applying oil paint over water-based paint?

I'm restoring an old staircase that was painted with some sort of water-based paint, or akryl paint. I've sanded down the rough spots and would now like to repaint using oil-based paint. Can this be done? Will using an oil-based paint over water-based paint result in a good, smooth finish or is combining the two types of paint not a good idea?
Thanks,
Andreas

As long as the latex is in decent shape [no peeling, etc] there will be no problems with using oil base over top.
