Painting a garage door

I have a new garage door to paint (latex). The door is pre-primed, but the bolt heads are bare metal. Should I prime the bolt heads, or is that overkill?

Thanks!

Also be sure the door is clean. Sometimes the doors come from the factory with some type of oily film on them.

An oily coating over the factory primer? I wonder why. If so, what would one do to remove it without having the primer come off with it? I pose the question so that anyone reading this may know exactly what to do if they paint such a door.

If they have a film on them just wipe them down with a wet thinner rag. New doors almost always have paper work with them detailing the manufactures preferred prep and type of coating - which is usually latex.

Fortunately, my door didn't have an oily film, but it was dirty. It was installed about two months ago and had plenty of time to collect dirt, dust, pollen, etc.

Unfortunately, I didn't factor in time to wash the door. And, it needed some sanding. Still learning...
