oil based over latex

Can I use an oil-based paint over a latex paint? Or must I remove the latex first? I'm painting on an exterior metal surface.

Hmmm...this could be tricky
Do you know if the metal was primed first?
Or is the latex right on the metal?

It's on a 42 year old pontoon boat. The metal was primed with some kind of automotive primer, I'm assuming, as it was previously painted with automotive paint.

We got all the old paint off & most of the primer remained intact.

The metal is galvanized steel. Yes--I know you're supposed to have some kind of special primer--but using an "old trick" I scraped two of the poles holding the upper deck down to the bare metal, coated them with vinegar & painted them with oil based tractor paint & they've held up wonderfully!

ditto for any railing etc that had spots that needed to be repainted. I scraped them down to bare metal, sanded & wire brushed--making sure I got all the "chalky" stuff off. & painted those also with the tractor paint after first coating with vinegar.

I've since convinced hubby that if "it ain't broke don't fix it"--so we're buying oil based tractor paint to paint the sides instead of using latex again. Seemed to hold up well on the poles....so....

hopefully the auto primer will like the tractor paint better?????

Equipment enamel/industrial enamel should work fine. I wouldn't expect any problems with it going over the primer. I would not use any latex because it has no rust deterring properties - with latex, only the primer would be a rust barrier.
