On what?

What type of surface, interior, exterior?

Stain colors, while paint coats. A solid stain isn't transparent but the grain and texture of the wood should be visable.

It is for the exterior of a wooden house, a painter asked me if it was painted or stained, shouldn't a professional painter be able to tell the difference? I'm trying to find a painter to paint my brothers house in another state.

A good painter should be able to tell the difference although sometimes it can be difficult to tell - like when the house has multiple coats of solid stain.

I'll often ask the home owner what was used previously, mostly to confirm my observation and to make sure I recoat with best coating for that job.

...or I suppose I should say the painting contractor should be able to deal with an answer of "unknown"
