Paint or drywall over plywood walls?

I have a Gunderson home (if you know what that is) and all the inside walls are plywood. Some have wallpaper over it and some or just varnished. If I paint over it there will be seams visable where the 4 foot section meet. Now aside from drywalling over this, is there some way to even up the seams and just applying paint to make it look like a finished wall?

You can remove the strips and fil them in with joint compound or durabond but it will crack if there is any movement of the plywood - settling or shrinking/swelling due to humidity changes.

Also you can't just paint over varnish. First it needs to be sanded and cleaned, then a solvent based primer must be applied to insure adhesion of the paint.

I would recomend either priming and painting with the strips in place or laminating the plywood with 1/4" sheetrock which could then be finished like any other sheetrock.
