restoring the silver color of my lamp base

I don't know if this is the right forum for this. I have a pair of silver based modern lamps. the silver on them is uneven - it looks dull in parts and very shiny in others, almost as if a layer of polish had come off. I don't know the metal - might be some kind of chrome or brushed metal. Any recommendations on restoring the even shine to these pieces? Any metal paint that would work without looking "metallic"?

Welcome to the diy forums!

I don't know that I'd want to paint a lamp base but if I did, I'd consider one of the "chrome" spray paints - not really chrome just a bright shiny silver.

You'll need to determine if in fact it was a lacquer or clear enamel finish that once was covering the metal, but now has come off in spots

Or if it is the actual metal finish or coating that has come off in spots

I have a problem whenever I paint trim in my house. I sand and prime it with a latex primer and then paint it, but it always peels. Does anyone know why? I know the walls were all terrible to paint as well. The paint sort of slid along the wall and did not cover well. It took many coats to do a nice job. I have no idea what is all on the walls and trim since ths is an older house.
