Large Steel Fireplace, How to finish?

I have a Large steel FirePlace which has rusted over the years.
Just want to make it shine and leave the rust which will darken
and look less like rust if it is finished, I think.

This spring, I polished with steel wool & furniture polish spray.
It looked good that day but the following morning did not look like anything was done.

Anyone know what would be a good finish to use?

Thanks in advance!

I don't often get a call to paint anything like that but when I do I almost always use high heat flat black. I don't know if there is a high heat clear finish. You might try asking at a paint store [not paint dept]

Has inner flu

The exterior does not get that hot!
You can put your hand on it when there's a fire going.

IF heat isn't a factor you can use varnish/poly or linseed oil.

I just realized you had applied furniture polish to the metal - THIS MUST BE REMOVED before applying a new finish.
