Why do I bother asking . . .

I was in a BigBox lumber store last night looking for some building material.

Just thought I would walk into their paint department and browse. Was asked by a "paint department customer rep" if I needed help. I said I was just looking for paint that could possibly be used on an old counter. "Melamine paint, but it's not really good for counters", she said . . . So I spotted CIL Professional Marine Enamel on the next shelf and asked her if that would work. "No way, that's only for the inside of boats", she replied

It just confirms the forum advice to deal with a real paint store when buying paint. I have being doing that recently (using BM paint now) but browsing in the BigBox store made me realize that any of their advice needs to be taken with a grain of salt . . .

To be honest, I'm not sure there is any paint I would use on a counter other than maybe a lightly-used bartop.

Too much scrapes, scratches, abrasion, and scrubbing...

I agree, I already decided to replace the counter top However, I did check the BM site and they do recommend a paint for counters. But like you said, it will likely scratch easy.

Both BM (which I sell) and Sherwin Williams make an Industrial Maintenance coating that's darn near indestructible.

They're both a 2-part epoxy and work well.

Well to defend the people working there you cant blame them. The store pays prolly $8 per hour, what do you expect for $8? If that store REALLY cared (Along with all other big stores like Autoparts ones) they would pay more and TRAIN more. Its impossible to get a mechanic/painter who has 20 years experience for $8. And without training of some sort it is impossible to have some $8 help know everything about every car/paint everyone would need.

In all fairness, advice you receive from anyone should be taken with a grain of salt.

But be especially wary of orange box employees!!

"I havent seen any bad ones" LOL Hes only been there for 3 weeks!!! Since I have worked there (5years) I havent sold a one that didnt come back!!! Needless to say when I went in 2 days later it had been returned!! LOL

I love to go to the big box stores and ask paint questions. Makes me realize that my company is not that bad to work for and that they do care that their employees give good advice. I also shop the cabinets to keep up on trends. I love looking at the shoddy construction and crappy looking finish. too bad some of my customers think Crapmade Cabinets are better then anything else out there.
